At Manshausen you are likely to find deep tranquillity and feel re-energised. This in itself fosters a sense of well-being. But it’s worth noting that year-round, our hot tub and specially-designed sauna are waiting to melt away your tensions.

Fishing

Kayak

The kayak is a humble yet ingenious vessel that gives you an intimate connection with the waters. Regardless of the season, kayaking is something that everyone can enjoy, with or without a guide. We have plenty of single and double kayaks, paddles and life-jackets. We also offer courses for groups; participants can earn the “våtkort” certification of the Norwegian Canoe & Kayaking Association (NPF).

Hiking the mountains

A wonderful thing about the mountains in our region is how quickly you are awarded with a fantastic view as you gain elevation. It is on these hikes that you can truly appreciate the awesome and rugged beauty of Steigen and the Lofoten Islands. Moreover, since our coastal areas rarely receive much snow, you can enjoy mountain hikes all year. Worst case? You may have to don snowshoes.

Culture

From the 1600s, the Grøtøy old trading post was a central element in our area’s commerce. This heyday is still very much remembered and in evidence, and for insights into these fascinating historical chapters we heartily recommend a visit to the coastal museum at Nordskot. If you are travelling by car, you should also consider visiting the Hamsun Centre, as well as Batterie Dietl, a coastal fortress and artillery unit established on Engeløya island during the German occupation.

Row your boat!

Rowing is a simple, almost-silent and rather pure way to enjoy the waters around Manshausen. Feel free to borrow one of our rowboats anytime, either just to relax or to try your luck dropping a fishing line over the gunwale.

Go for a stroll

Our island measures 14 acres. That’s large enough for nice walks, and there is plenty to discover. Also the neighbouring islands are worth exploring; some of them have old buildings that are of historic interest.

Sea eagles

This majestic bird of prey, which can have a wingspan of over two meters, thrives in Steigen, and we often see it soaring the sky high above. If you are interested in wildlife photography or bird-watching, and wish to learn more about sea eagles, we have a resident expert who would be happy to take you on a Sea Eagle Safari.

Cave tour

A 45-minute walk from the village of Norsdskot is the 140 metre long Troll Cave (Resshola). Exploring it can be a joint delight for young and old. Good footwear and headlamps are a must!

The Nordskot traverse

One of our most popular challenges is the spectacular and breath-taking Nordskot traverse. It is technically demanding but a lot of fun, and your reward is an absolutely incredible panorama of the Vestfjord. Unless you are an experienced climber, we strongly recommend that you take this trek with one of our guides.

The prime season for this is the winter, between October and March.
