The Weather

One of the things that makes Manshausen so unique is the ever-changing weather. We realize some people are anxiously hoping for good weather their entire stay, but guests who have been her during a storm describe it as a memorable experience, one they would not have missed for the world! You will sleep just as soundly, and enjoy dining just as much – but will feel even closer to the impressive natural elements!

Here in the Steigen region, we have far more good weather than many people think. That said, winter is probably our favourite season. You can enjoy all the activities that you would in the summer, but the light is truly magical, and temperatures are milder than you might expect. Moreover, it’s particularly peaceful here during the winter.

It’s good to know that Manshausen is well-equipped for every season. And our boats, life-jackets and dry-suits are ideal year-round.

Storm

Fishermen have always had a healthy fear of the Vestfjord, which despite its name is an open stretch of sea between Manshausen and the Lofoten Islands. Its waters can be very turbulent indeed when a storm is raging. Fortunately for us, Manshausen is very sheltered, beautifully nestled amongst other islands, islets and reefs that dampen the worst waves. All the same, we can still enjoy our storms!

Midnight sun

It’s extra lively during the time of the midnight sun. You can savour the scenery and enjoy activities round-the-clock; do your sleeping when you get home! For visitors it will seem especially exotic that the sun is shining 24 hours a day, and that the songs and sounds from nature itself seem unceasing. Soon your body will realize that all your senses are awake and fully enlivened!

Calm and quiet

Yes, it is calm and quiet after the storm! However, our storms are few and far between, and moreover, Manshausen is so sheltered that you can almost always enjoy a stroll on our island. Most of the time you can also go kayaking and enjoy other activities. Far more often, the sea is mirror-calm!

Starry sky

Yes, that band of countless stars stretching across the sky is the Milky Way! Because of light pollution from buildings and streetlights and traffic, you don’t see it much in the city. But here at Manshausen, the sky is filled with starlight and will seem as magical to you as it did when you were a child. If you have a camera, and perhaps a tripod, it may be hours before you get to bed!

Winter

We rarely receive much snow, but when it comes it’s a welcome guest. When fresh snow wraps us in its white, the landscape gains a new luminosity and the contrasts against the darkness are amazing. And, yes, you can go kayaking and fishing and hiking, and much more.

Northern Lights

Frequently during the winter, we here at Manshausen are treated to the magical dance of the Northern Lights across the sky. It is an amazing phenomenon that truly needs to be witnessed rather than explained. From your cabin, thanks to its floor-to-ceiling windows, you have a front-row seat. And just like a weather forecast, there is also a Northern Lights forecast, at nordlysvarsel.com. You can even download an app to your mobile phone.
