Ski and Sail in Steigen

MANSHAUS is an ideal starting point for ski tours by boat. The feeling of waking up in a spacious and pleasant sailboat, then after breakfast to climb over the gunwale practically on skis is unique. Several of the peaks on Steigenberger are only accessible by boat, for example Heldal ice.

You are here mostly by yourself, and can make virgin ski trails in a pretty raw terrain. The views are amazing on all trails. Best season in Steigen is from mid-February to early May. The tour starts or ends either from Manshausen, by appointment. Sailboat can accommodate between 5 and 11 guests. We offer weeklong trips where you sail to the start of a new mountain every day. And after a day of great downhill return we to the boat to relax and enjoy good food made on board.

Training and experience:

The guide considers the destination to suit you and your group depending on experience. There is a guide on all tours, although  experienced people can go without a guide if they so wish. Good general skiing skills and experience of downhill skiing is needed. It is also recommended that you have some experience on off-piste skiing. Weather and snow conditions in Northern Norway is constantly changing and our  experienced local skipper and the guide will watch the weather, and in consultation with the group will choose the peaks with the best snow conditions.

The day starts with a good and healthy breakfast on board before we pack up to go. After the tour is finished (with burning thighs and great memories), it’s time for a real homemade dinner on board (not Drytech expedition food this time!).

As usual warm clothes, gloves and hats that can take a beating. Wool and Gore-tex recommended, remember spare ones. Equipment list sent on request. Rubber boots for disembarkation with inflatable boat are practical and accepted. You need your personal ski equipment plus  an electronic avalanche transceiver and shovel. The equipment is transported in bags, making it easy to stow on board. Skis and poles must be in the ski bag to be lashed on deck.

Lille Polaris is a new-renovated 45 foot aluminum sailboat, owned by the guide, Sture Ellingsen from Bodø. The boat has two double and one single cabin with room for five guests plus skipper and guide. The boat is equipped with two bathrooms, shower, and diesel heater. For larger groups, up to ten people, we have the opportunity to rent a larger steel boat with more cabin space.
